Our equipment

This provides an overview of some of the equipment we have chosen to have on board VUE MER.

Of course, we always place safety at the top of our list, and as we are now really going on a long trip, our equipment has been further upgraded.

VESTS

We have tried different types of vests, and have now finally settled on Spinlock vests for everyone on board. We have a Spinlock Vito Offshore and the rest are the Spinlock Deckvest 6D Model.

What we like best about them is how easy they are to wear, as well as the safety features built into the vests.

We have some rules on board that we do not deviate from no matter what. One of them is that whoever is on deck when we are underway in a light wind, always hooks himself with a line. This also applies to the helmsman sitting behind. We have chosen a solution with two or three hooks, one of which has a slightly longer line than the other. The reason for this is that we believe it is a safety feature to always have a hook attached to the boat if you have to move so much that you have to attach yourself to a new place.

You've heard enough stories about people falling overboard and not being able to get them back on board. Considering the Skipper's weight, you can understand the problem.

When you also see how high our boat is in the freeboard, you understand the problem even better.

After researching various tests and more online, the choice fell on this device. Easy to handle for someone on deck, and allows you to also manage to hoist an unconscious person up. We have had a couple of test tests, and it works very well, although a little difficult to put back together!

MOB

Baltic LifeSaver

The LifeSaver LS101 is an automatically inflatable horseshoe buoy. The lifebuoy is shaped like a rugby ball and is therefore easy to store, nice to look at, but above all - easy to throw with distance and precision.

The outer part is attached to the lifebuoy with a line, and then functions as a drift anchor, so that the lifebuoy does not blow away from the casualty.

Dan Buoy in polyurethane-coated, yellow nylon. When inflated, the buoy measures 1.98 m above the water surface. The buoy has slings/handles, making it easy to hold on to, lights that automatically turn on and a drift anchor that ensures minimal drift from the release position.

A good pair of binoculars is a must. This one is very good!

Steiner Commander 7x50 is the optimal boat binoculars. The NBR rubber reinforcement combined with the design of the binoculars gives you a good grip on the binoculars, even with just one hand. The objective diameter gives the Commander a bright and stable image. There is also an integrated compass that makes it easy to determine direction.

INTERCOM

How often have we experienced that it is very windy or that there is noise from the anchor winch and chain, and the other person does not hear what you are trying to communicate.

Now we will finally have to stop shouting loudly to each other when we dock, drop anchor or climb the mast.

These are easily paired with each other via Bluetooth, and allow us to speak in a normal tone to each other when we need to give each other messages. Definitely contributes to a better environment on board.

INTERNET

Starlink V2

This is absolutely fantastic. Works everywhere in Europe with our subscription, and can also be used offshore. But most importantly, it's fast even with five, six users at once. Stream movies from Netflix, zero problem!

We have purchased a regular fishing rod holder for the antenna, which we have mounted at the back of the boat so that the antenna is free.

There have been a lot of changes to subscription types recently, so we're a little excited for next year, but until then "we love Starlink"

DRIVE ANCHORS

Marinvent Drift anchor

High-quality PVC drift anchors can help if you have an engine failure or breakdown at sea. Drift anchors ensure that the bow comes up into the weather.

Accidents can happen, engine failure or other faults or damage that lead to loss of control. Then this is a very useful tool. We have chosen the largest model with an opening of 152 cm.

HEADLIGHT

Mantus Headlamp

We have eventually grown to enjoy sailing at night too.

One of the challenges with that is that it gets very dark (unless you're sailing on a Norwegian summer night!) So having a good headlamp is invaluable.

What we particularly like about this one is that we can have red light so as not to be blinded, but can of course also easily change it to bright white light when needed. It is also designed in such a way that you have several straps over your head, so it fits well once you have put it on.

The headlamp should also be waterproof to 10 meters, which fortunately we haven't had to test!

Current

Having enough power on board has become more and more important over time. This applies to all instruments, but of course all phones, PCs, iPads and more that need to be charged, as well as various electrical appliances we have on board to have as comfortable a life as possible.

CONSUMER BATTERIES

We have 4 x 200 AH as service batteries. We have only had Lithium for the last two boats, and will never change that. With such a large battery bank and a powerful Inverter, we can connect all electrical appliances whenever we want.

For thrusters, anchor winches and starter batteries, we have 2 series-connected at the front (24V) and a single one for the starter battery.

We love to stay in the harbor, and it's great to know that you're as safe as possible at night.

ANCHOR

Anchoring is one of our favorites. Being a little alone and experiencing places that you would not otherwise have been to is absolutely priceless. A prerequisite for enjoying this is that you have an anchor that you trust. In recent years, we have sworn by Rocna Vulcan. Vue Mer weighs about 14 tons, so we have chosen an anchor of 33 kg. In addition, we have 100 meters of 10 mm chain. Our experience so far is that the anchor is very quickly found when we anchor, and that it sits very well regardless of wind conditions or wind shifts.

So we sleep well when we anchor!!

ANCHOR 2

Fortress FX-37

We have now acquired anchor number 2. Both to have a spare anchor if we lose our main anchor, but also if we want to set out two anchors due to weather. Can also be used as a stern anchor when the swells and wind come from different directions, and we want to lie directly against the waves.

The Fortress anchor is very practical in several ways. It can be unscrewed and it doesn't weigh much. This means we can easily store it away when we're not using it.

ANCHOR SWIVEL

Ultra Marine - Ultra Flip UFS 10-35

How many times have we hoisted the anchor and it goes into the anchor roller the wrong way! So lean forward over the bowsprit and try to turn it around.

After we got this swivel from Ultra Marine, this has never been a problem, as it now always comes the right way. At the same time, it is a construction that, among other things, means that you do not have to have a shackle attached to the anchor, which can often be a new thing to watch out for.

The product is relatively expensive to purchase, but at least it gives us peace of mind - and that is important!

ROCKFEET

Mantus Cock foot w/hook

After lying up all night and hearing the chain moving in the anchor winch, the choice was easy - we have to get a crow's foot!

Several reasons why we chose the Mantus model. Firstly, it comes in different sizes, is very solidly made, and there is protection around the rope. At the same time, it also comes with a hook, so you can use it to moor to a buoy.

One of the big advantages of a crow's foot is that the weight from the chain is now distributed between the two cross-bolts, so there is no risk that the entire chain could slip out of the anchor winch if the chain is pulled too hard.

The disadvantage for us with this solution is that we have to step on the hook that is attached to the chain, just below the bowsprit. This may require a bit of acrobatic exercise, or taking the dinghy out afterwards and attaching it.

ANCHOR MARKER

Fender Design - Anchorroll

Often we have come to an anchorage where several other boats are already moored. What we often wonder is where have the others set their anchor? Another scenario, which we have fortunately not yet experienced, is that someone sets their anchor over our chain because they do not know where our anchor is.

The anchorroll is attached to the anchor with a self-pulling line, and goes out with the anchor. It will then be directly above where the anchor is. We have it hanging on the front rail, so it is easily accessible and not in the way.

On top of the buoy, there is also a solar-powered light mounted, so that you can also see it in the dark.

ANCHOR SAIL

We were tired of the boat moving so much when we were at anchor. After we got this, there are extremely less oscillations and we are much calmer.

Simply put, there are two sails that stick out on either side, and one that is in the center. This allows the wind to catch the sails when we turn, and right the boat faster.

UNDERWATER DRONE

The opportunity to send a drone down to see if the anchor is in good condition, as well as being able to explore life underwater, was enticing. So it was great when the Boat Santa had this for the Skipper one Christmas!

Sail

We received the boat with completely normal sails from Elvstrøm. Over time, we have upgraded with more sails for the jib and mainsail, which is what we definitely sail the most.

Vi har valgt selvslående fokk på båten på rull. Dette forenkler livet betraktelig når vi krysser av gårde og båten egentlig kan seiles som en jolle uten å måtte justere et skjøte.

Code 0

Elvstrøm Permanent Hoist

Areal: 86 kvm

Vi fikk dette seilet før vi skulle seile fra La Rochelle til Oslo. Tanken var at vi ville kunne få mye slør og lens på veien, og i perioder ikke så mye vind. Vi trengte derfor et seil som kunne bidra til at vi økte farten i forhold til vår selvslående fokk.

En av de tingene som skiller dette seilet fra andre Code 0, er at det er sydd med et UV filter ytterst, samt at duken også er noe sterkere. Seilet går selvfølgelig på rulle og har Bottom/Up.

Dette medførte at vi heiste seilet i La Rochelle, og hadde det stående oppe hele turen med skjøter og alt på. Ved at det kun var å trekke det ut når en skulle bruke det, og trekke det inn når ferdig, gjorde at dette seilet ble brukt veldig ofte. Vi brukte det også opp til 15 - 20 knops vind, uten at det var et problem.

En utfordring med seilet, er at ved at det er såpass solid i duken, med sin størrelse og rull med skjøter mm, så veier det veldig mye. Vi har løst dette, ved at vi bruker fallet for å heise det opp fra seil luken, når det ikke allerede står oppe.

PARASAILOR

Istec Parasailor

Areal: 152 kvm

Veldig ofte når vi er ute og seiler, så har vi vinden nesten rett bakfra. Dette er en vindretning som ikke fungerer bra for Code 0.

Nå når vi skal seile over atlanteren, var valget lett - vi trenger et seil for medvind.

Etter å ha undersøkt ulike alternativer, falt valget på Parasailor. Seilet kan brukes fra 70 til 180 grader på vinden, en trenger ikke bruke spribom, holder båten mere stabil og gjør det lettere å bruke autopilot, og kan tåle vind opp til 24 knop. Vi har ennå ikke fått testet det, så blir spennende til våren.

BOMB BRAKE

After having a couple of voyages on almost flat ground and with big waves, we quickly found out that we had to get a boom brake. The forces that occur when you suddenly get an involuntary jib or broach are definitely not something the boat and the equipment benefit from. Boom lines, blocks that break, leeways that break and more can quickly happen. Sometimes it can be as simple as getting a slightly too big sea from behind, and you are unable to keep the boat correctly in relation to the wind. Another equally important element is the danger to the crew on board if the same thing were to happen.

We have now installed this model, but have not yet tested it in harsh conditions. We will therefore return to how it works when we have more experience.

But one thing is certain - one must have some mechanism to protect oneself against involuntary gybe.

Electrical appliances

After we upgraded with a large lithium battery bank and large inverter, we have also been able to acquire various electrical appliances that make everyday life more comfortable.

WATERMAKER

With a long trip ahead of us, this was one of the easy choices. The ability to make water without having to go to a marina every time.

We have a powerful inverter, as well as a Honda generator, so we chose an electric solution.

Our model can produce over 100-120 liters per hour, but there are also smaller models.

WASHING MACHINE

The possibility of being able to wash clothes along the way was enticing.

This machine weighs 2.5 kilos and can be mounted on the wall. Ordered on ebay from a Dutch company, and after two weeks we had it delivered. We have mounted it on the toilet in front, and are waiting to test it in the spring.

WATER FLUSHER

What's more annoying than pulling up an anchor that has been well buried in mud. The chain is full of mud as you pull it down into the chain room, there are big lumps on the anchor, and it sits well. This was the main reason we installed this. Being able to flush the muck off right away is incredibly nice.

Of course, it can also be used to flush the rest of the boat.

We have mounted this in the front and connected it directly to a water tank and to the battery bank. You can also connect it with a hull feedthrough to use salt water.

BREAD BAKING MACHINE

Nothing is as delicious as waking up to the smell of fresh bread in the morning.

We make vacuum bags at home with pre-mixed bread dough, and put it in the machine in the evening with some dry yeast and a bag - delicious!

AIRFRIGERATOR

After trying out the Airfryer at home, we found that this would be perfect to have on the boat.

Uses little electricity, saves gas, less waste and good food.

We have now tested it all summer, and can only say that we are super satisfied!

COFFEE MACHINE

There's nothing better than coffee when you wake up in the morning. And being able to just put in a capsule and press the button when you want it definitely makes life even better. We have our own space in a cupboard for this where we only pull out a shelf with the machine when we need it, and otherwise it sits safe and sound.

PRINTER

On our upcoming trip, there will be many countries we will be checking in and out of. It is very handy to have a printer where you can print out various documents you need.

This model is both small and light, and it also runs on batteries if desired.

PROJECTOR

Sometimes it's nice to watch a movie together in the evening, or look at photos and videos we've taken. With this very small projector and a loose screen, we expect this need to be met.

Dinghy / Trailer

Since we really like to stay out in the harbor, it's also very good to have a proper dinghy to get around in. As well as an engine that works for our needs.

We had a few criteria when choosing a dinghy. It had to be able to withstand some sea, be stable, have room for several people, and a dinghy that we could pull up to the beach without risking damage to the boat.

We also have the boat in davits, so weight was also an important criterion in the choice.

We therefore chose a Highfield Rib with an aluminum bottom.

This satisfies our desires in every possible way.

We get in and out of the boat safely without feeling like it's going to tip over, the pontoons are relatively large, so we don't get all the seas on board when we drive, it plans without a problem with four people on board with a 9.9 HP, it can be pulled up on the beach because it has an aluminum bottom, and it's so light that we have no problem pulling or carrying it.

ELECTRIC MOTOR

Epropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus

We have had a 9.9 horsepower on our dinghy for many years. A great engine when you need to get from A to B quickly when it's on the dinghy, but it's an incredible hassle to get it on and off the dinghy due to the weight.

We therefore chose to purchase an Epropulsion Electric Motor to have something easier to handle on most of our dinghy trips. (which are actually quite short!) Can't say anything other than that we are super satisfied. Can be divided into different elements that make it easy to lift up and down, actually goes quite a long way, and is completely silent!

We have a 9.9 HP hanging on the engine bracket, and have this in the living room hatch for the time being. How long this will last is a big question, as we already see that it is very rare that we think we need to use 9.9 HP.

ATTACHMENT

When we're going far, this is the engine we turn to. Goes fast and far. The only problem is the weight when we have to take it on and off.

MOTOR DAVIT

We were tired of trying to balance the engine from the deck down to the dinghy and back. With constant fear of losing the engine or the possibility of chiropractic hours for multiple thousands, the choice was easy when we saw this one.

I have upgraded with other blocks and ropes, so I get better gearing. It has definitely made everyday life easier when we use the 4-stroke.

SHORE ANCHORS

Drill anchor

When we use the dinghy to get to a beach, it is often a problem to tie the dinghy down so that it does not float away. Whether this is due to waves hitting it or tides or other reasons is different, the problem is the same.

We now have an anchor that we can "drill" into the sand and attach the dinghy to.

Initial experiences are positive, so we are excited about what will continue.

There are always new products that we see others have, or that we read about. Sometimes these work so well that we have to have them! This is an overview of some of them

MOORING

Kivikskroken Bending hook

Many boats eventually start to get quite tall. This means that it can sometimes be difficult to reach, for example, a buoy while leaning down. There are various models on the market that are intended to help with this.

We have found that this is the simplest and best model for us. We just attach a rope to the end, and then we crouch down on the buoy. When we are lying still, we can more easily bend down and thread a rope through, and then remove the hook.

Another case where this has greatly simplified our job is when we are, for example, attaching the stern mooring to a buoy on the way in. How often have you experienced that the person trying to thread the rope through misses this, and you have to back off or try again. By using this, it is much easier to attach the hook to the ring on the buoy, and just make sure that you have enough rope to get in. Then you just tie it tight, and leave the hook in the buoy until you are ready to leave.

MOORING

Outmar Rat-Stop

One of our biggest fears is getting pests on board. We have three of these, which are attached to the ropes when we are lying on land. Can also be attached to a chain if desired. It works so that the disc turns if you try to get past it, with the result that the animal falls into the water. A big advantage is that you can attach it to the ropes after you have moored, and that two ropes can go through.

SUP/KAYAK HOLDER

Magma SUP Holder

Easy way to ensure that your SUP boards or kayak are securely attached to the boat, while keeping the deck clear. This is attached to the outside of the boat on the row mounts. When not in use, the pole can be folded in so that they do not protrude from the boat.

Our experience is that they work excellently, but you should be a little observant when you lay down longside, on the same side where these are attached.

ARCH

Atlantic Towers Arch

We have now had an arch installed at the back of the boat. On this, we will, among other things, install solar cells and davits that lift the boat high up from the sea.

Atlantic Towers delivers ready-made individual modules that can be customized to your boat. Looks very good, and we look forward to installing the rest of the equipment on it.

FANS

Koonie 10000MAH

It can get hot in the boat, and especially when you're going to bed, it's nice to have some airing.

We have purchased one of these for each cabin to ensure fresher air. They are rechargeable and work without a cord. We have also chosen these because they are relatively quiet and portable.
