The Göta Canal is a waterway in Sweden that connects the Baltic Sea with the lakes Vättern and Vänern, 190.5 kilometres long, of which 87 kilometres are man-made. Together with the Trollhätte Canal and the Göta River, the Göta Canal forms a 390 kilometres long waterway across Sweden, from the Baltic Sea to the Kattegat.
The Göta Canal runs from the Baltic Sea east of Söderköping to the lakes Asplången, Roxen and Boren, and on to Vättern at the town of Motala. From Vättern it runs at Karlsborg to Vänern at Sjötorp. The difference in elevation between the mean water level in Vänern (44 metres), Viken (the canal's highest point, 92 metres) and the Baltic Sea is equalised by 58 locks.
The largest permitted dimensions for vessels are length 30 meters, width 7 meters, height 22 meters and depth 2.8 meters.
